Volunteer gardening days at the reserve
Buckland lake covers 60 acres of land, all which has to be carefully managed to ensure that the diversity and beauty of the reserve is preserved.
We organise volunteer days through the year to help manage the reserve and keep it in top running order!
Some of the benifits you get out of volunteering…
o Spend the day out of doors, getting plenty of fresh air and exercise.
o Get involved with a wildlife and environmental project.
o Become part of a team.
o Meet new friends who are interested in conservation and the environment.
o Bring your friends or family and encourage them to give some time to helping with a worthwhile project.
o Offset your ‘carbon foot print’ by helping the environment.
A typical volunteer day runs like this….
The day starts at 11.00, and begins with a brief about which jobs need to be done on the reserve. Everyone grabs the tools and gets busy until 12.30 when its ‘tools down’ and time for lunch. This is a great chance to get to know your fellow volunteers and have a walk round the reserve or do some bird spotting. At 1.15 work beings gain until 2.30 which is then time to put the tools away and have a cuppa.
We always make sure that there are jobs planned for all age ranges and physical abilities so that no one is left out. If you feel that you can only attend a volunteer day for a couple of hours that is fine too, any help is gratefully received. Under 16’s need to be accompanied by an adult.
Please wear sensible clothes, boots or old shoes are fine. It’s often windy here so it’s a good idea to bring a coat and hat even if the sun is shining. Gardening gloves are a ‘must have’ too. If you have any spare tools or buckets bring them along as we don’t have a huge amount of tools here yet.
Volunteers are a huge help to a reserve like Buckland Lake, and we are always open to new ideas and suggestions. We are here not only for the benefit of the diverse and amazing wildlife but also for the benefit of the people who get involved in this unique and cherished project.
